The Night is Dark and Full of Roarers

reimagining West Sumatra’s night music

The Night is Dark and Full of Roarers reimagines the traditional night music of West Sumatera through multichannel loudspeakers (two or more channels) and live electronic processing of saluang, sarunai, and bansi, wind instruments made from bamboo originated from West Sumatra, Indonesia.

Using SuperCollider, the sound of saluang, sarunai, and bansi is live-processed and spatialized which may evoke acousmatic images at some points. The program mainly uses the software’s built-in pattern libraries through which the sound is electronically manipulated. This performance also utilizes live coding as its live processing method.
